When I arrived in the United Arab Emirates 13 years ago as a Ukrainian architect and interior designer, my perception of local women was shaped by typical Western stereotypes. I imagined strict black abayas, a deeply secluded lifestyle, and an impenetrable cultural distance. However, my profession granted me a rare and sacred privilege, the opportunity to step behind the doors of Emirati homes and, more importantly, to become someone they trust to design their material worlds.
Today, on Emirati Women’s Day, I want to share who they truly are when they gather in the warmth of their family circles, stepping into the curated privacy of their sanctuary. This is an artist’s perspective, capturing how I learned to see their authentic strength, sophisticated taste, and immense vision through the very geometry of their living spaces.
Architects of Their Own Destiny: The Power of Home
The first major revelation I had as an architect is that an Emirati home is fundamentally a woman's domain. While men confidently secure the foundations and handle the macro budgets, the final decision on how daily life is structured and experienced belongs entirely to the soul of the household.
They possess an incredible capacity for long-term strategic thinking. When developing layouts for expansive villas, I realized they never design a house just for the present moment or the immediate couple. They build for generations. They meticulously plan entire wings for their sons’ future families and structure vast communal zones to host hundreds of guests. An Emirati woman acts as the gentle heart of the home, but she is undeniably its strongest structural foundation.
The Geometry of Taste: Bold Self-Expression Within
Many outsiders assume that wearing a black abaya in public limits individuality. In reality, the exact opposite is true. The modesty of public dress acts as a catalyst for a magnificent explosion of creativity inside the private residence.
As an interior designer, I am constantly struck by the precision of their taste. The Emirati women I collaborate with are highly educated global citizens. They understand European design principles, appreciate Italian minimalism, and love French elegance. Yet, they possess a flawless ability to weave their own rich heritage into modern spaces. They never shy away from bold color palettes, intricate textures, or avant-garde furniture shapes. Their interiors serve as a vibrant manifesto of their inner freedom, beautifully curated for those they love.
Women and Art: Visionary Collectors and Patrons
As a visual artist, I discovered wonderful kindred spirits in Emirati women. They possess an innate, generationally cultivated reverence for fine craftsmanship and manual labor. They do not purchase expensive decor simply to fill empty corners; they seek profound meaning.
The contemporary Emirati woman is a deeply passionate art collector. They actively champion local talent and regularly frequent international exhibitions like Art Dubai. For me, as an artist from Ukraine, it was a profound revelation to see how deeply they connect with painting. In their homes, abstract art and avant-garde sculptures live in perfect harmony next to traditional Arabic calligraphy. They notice the quietest details, the intricate weave of a handmade rug or the sweeping curve of a minimalist ceramic vase.
Mutual Reflections: Lessons from 13 Years Together
Over more than a decade, the UAE has truly become my second home. While I initially thought I was here to share European design practices, I now see how much Emirati women have taught me in return:

Today's Emirati woman represents a unique global phenomenon, a flawless blend of gentle femininity and iron willpower, unyielding loyalty to tradition, and an ultra-modern worldview.
