The Raw Ingredients: Cotton vs. Wood Pulp
The journey of high-end watercolor paper begins with raw materials. Student-grade papers are typically made from wood pulp (cellulose). While affordable, cellulose fibers are short and unstable, causing the paper to warp and degrade over time when exposed to heavy washes.
In contrast, professional-grade watercolor papers are made from 100% cotton. Cotton fibers are naturally longer, more flexible, and incredibly strong. The Secret Ingredient: Sizing
Why doesn't watercolor paper act like a kitchen paper towel and instantly soak up all the liquid into an uncontrollable blotch? The answer is "sizing." Sizing is a starch or gelatin treatment applied to the paper either internally (mixed into the pulp) or externally (coated on the surface). This gelatin shield slows down the absorption rate of the water.
